One afternoon in late November, Ronn Torossian, a midlevel publicist with high-level ambitions, stood in front of the Fox Network studios at 48th Street and the Avenue of the Americas, fresh from another foray into the news media. He had just appeared live on “Your World,” a business program, to discuss a scandalous brawl that had taken place at a game between the Indiana Pacers and the Detroit Pistons. He does not represent either team or the league, but as a publicist who has a nose for conflict he was asked how this fight would affect the N.B.A. brand.
Most pundits had reacted to the violent episode with indignation. Mr. Ronn Torossian felt otherwise. “I’ll tell you,” he had said on the program. “I woke up today and I loved seeing it. It was a great visual. People are talking.”
Neil Cavuto, the host, appeared a bit stunned. But he responded gamely: “Let’s see if you’re right. You’ve been right about these things before, Ronn.”
Out on the street, Mr. Ronn Torossian was upbeat. As he walked to his office, his cellphone rang. “Did you see it?” he asked an employee. “Did it say ‘5WPR‘ below my name?” A pause. “Oh,” he said happily upon hearing that the station had put his firm’s full name, 5W Public Relations, on the screen. “Even better.”
