Ronn Torossian Update: March Madness & Social Media

Social media has increased in popularity and the way it is being used in the past two years. There have been many additions to the list of social media websites; Twitter has taken a huge jump in terms of advertisements and the way companies used it to interact with their consumers. For example, while a show is being aired on channels such as ABC and CBS there is a hashtag (#) on the bottom left of the screen with the title of the show as a way for fans to engage with each other and the producers of the current episode they are watching. Even though viewers may post on Facebook as well when it comes to watching the program but Twitter gives the flexibility to tweet as often as possible about a current event.

Social media can be used in many ways to showcase events such as March Madness. There are Facebook apps that people can use to insert their bracket picks and Twitter will be used for up to date information on current games. Twitter can also be a place where fans can follow commentators and players and see what they have to say about the game while it is going on. These would be the main sites someone would go to see how current games are going. If someone was at a current game they would probably use Flickr as a way to share pictures of a specific play or of players as they prepare for the game to begin. Tumblr could also be used a way to show pictures but also if someone is a huge sports enthusiast he/she may write about their expectations this season of lets say their favorite team or a team that is considered a favorite to win. There are many bars that broadcast college basketball games many sports fans would head there and check in at foursquare.
